Finally made it to Farley Girls for Sunday brunch after having heard much about the venue and the food. The free validated parking next door is genius, allowing close proximity to the restaurant even during busy times in the medical center neighborhood. The place was bustling when we walked in with a couple of friends but we found a table right away. It seemed like everyone we knew was there so it is definitely a magnet for the Sunday crowd. I'm sure it is popular weekdays as well.
Ordering is self-serve, as in order-at-the-counter. We had time to peruse the menu while waiting our turn. There is a mouth-watering array of choices and there truly is “a little bit of everything”, including an omelet station. After ordering we served ourselves coffee (excellent!) and sat down to wait while visiting with our friends. The building has been through several incarnations over the years; the present proprietors have done a lovely job and the layout is open, bright and comfortable.
It wasn't long before our food arrived. My companion selected Eggs and Gris, with gouda, mushroom grits, and sautéed spinach. He was quite pleased. The eggs were over-medium to perfection, the smoky flavor of the gouda complemented the tangy hint provided by the mushrooms, giving the grits an uncharacteristically rich flavor. Being the sausage and egg type, he also ordered a side of chicken sausage. The patties were spicy enough to meet his standards and went very well with the eggs and grits.
While I was not in the condition of the “Hangover Helper Bowl”, the description had appealed to me. Scrambled egg, bacon, sausage and potatoes, with pepper jack cheese, avocado and salsa. The eggs were well done and the sausage patties were tender and just spicy enough. The potatoes added a satisfying texture. A bit heavy but delicious and I suspect it is a fine cure for that certain condition.
As a salad lover myself, I definitely eyed our friend's Cobb salad....chunks of chicken, boiled egg, blue cheese, avocado, bacon, and tomato on a bed of lettuce. She assured me it was excellent but would not share. Her companion had a roasted chicken club sandwich which was so impressively large he used a to-go box so he wouldn't miss any of it.
Our experience was so enjoyable that I understand the accolades I've been hearing. Great food, good service with very friendly staff. We had a visit from one of the “Girls” herself, wanting to be sure everything was A-OK. Definitely the way to run a restaurant. Currently open seven days a week for limited hours. We'll be back.
