David Adickes' oversize cornet made of white concrete over a steel skeleton, served as a stage prop at the New Orleans World's Fair before being placed in Galveston in 1986.

The well known Texan, Adickes was born in Huntsville and his art has been featured in many shows across the United States and in France where he lived for six years.

The Virtuoso, his first large size sculpture, was commissioned in 1983 by the Lyric Center.

Adickes' 67-foot-tall steel and concrete statue of Sam Houston was completed in 1994, a year after the bicentennial of Houston's birth. The statue is affectionately known as "Big Sam”.

His cornet is a favorite among both locals and visitors to Galveston. When on The Strand at 23rd Street, you cannot miss it.
