The Texas City Dike projects 5.3 miles into Galveston Bay and is a popular fishing and birding location. The Texas State Legislature authorized the construction of the dike in 1935 and ceded ownership to the City of Texas City. Today, the City promotes it as “the longest man-made fishing pier in the world”.
