July 31, 1908 – October 29, 2002
Lifeguard for Life”
“Ducky Prendergast was one of Galveston’s original professional lifeguards. He was credited with saving over 400 people from drowning in the Galveston surf from the 1920’s to 1992. From 1951 to 1992, he owned and operated a legendary beach concession business at 59th Street that became known as “Ducky’s Beach.” This plaque is dedicated in honor of his life-long devotion to the prevention of drowning and improving Galveston’s beaches.”
