American White Pelican
The American White Pelican is a large aquatic soaring bird with a 9 foot wingspan – one of the largest in North America. It primarily breeds in the interior of North America then moves south to the coasts, including Galveston, in winter. Some reside on the Texas Coast year round. They can be seen soaring very high over the Gulf and Bay. They forage by swimming on the surface scooping up fish.
