Hooded Merganser
Mergansers specialize in eating fish by diving and swimming underwater. The Hooded Merganser is the smallest of the three native to North America. The male has a flamboyant oversized head. Both sexes have a slender bill and crest that can be raised and lowered.
Look for them around wooded ponds like those at Lafitte’s Cove Nature Preserve in the winter.
