NATURE TOURISM

Did you know over 300 species of birds live in - or fly through - Galveston? Ornithologists far and wide do, which is why they descend here hoping to spot cormorants, egrets, herons, ducks, black skimmers, and more.  And that's not the only attraction the city offers to lovers of nature and the outdoors: it's also a popular destination for camping, hiking, kayaking, and, of course, fishing.

Where to Eat

For an all-day adventure, go fishing at Waterman’s Restaurant’s on-site marina (they have a fuel station, live bait and boat slips), then take a break and indulge in the restaurant’s stuffed shrimp or grilled red snapper. End the evening with happy hour at Waterman’s Sandbar, open seasonally. Other great places to fuel up include Jimmy’s on the Pier, which boasts amazing views and excellent fish and chips, or Black Pearl, where you simply must order the famous pearl po-boy, filled with fried oysters tossed in Cajun sauce.

What to Do

Take your rod and reel to Seawolf Park’s fishing pier, located on Galveston’s Pelican Island, which is popular with fishermen all year long. Spend an afternoon at East End Lagoon Nature Park and Preserve, which spans 700 acres of diverse habitats and makes the perfect spot for studying black skimmers, gulls, flora and fauna. Birders won’t want to miss Lafitte’s Cove, home to everything from warblers and vireos to thrushes and snipe. Or grab your kayak and head out to Galveston Island State Park.
