Common Loon
The Common Loon is a large member of the loon, or diver, family. During breeding season, loons live in Canada, the northern United States, and southern parts of Greenland and Iceland. They can be found wintering on Galveston Island.
Common loons eat a variety of animal prey including fish, crustaceans, and insect larvae, swallowing it underwater.
Kristine Rivers offers this tip:
“Expert divers that are very fast underwater as they pursue fish. Common Loons are dark above and light below with oddly-shaped heads and dagger-like bills. Look for them near the public boat ramp at Lee and Joe Jamail Bay Park.”
