Galveston Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks III – Heritage & Heart
Rising piano superstar Avery Gagliano returns to Galveston to dazzle audiences with Tchaikovsky’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 1 — the very piece that launched Van Cliburn to international fame and unexpectedly thawed Cold War tensions through the universal language of music. Cliburn’s legendary recording of this concerto was the first classical album ever to go platinum, and the work remains a beloved favorite to this day.
We’ll open the evening with Florence Price’s spirited Colonial Dance, an enchanting blend of joyful rhythms and sly wit that brilliantly fuses European and African American musical traditions. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s dramatic Seventh Symphony, a powerful masterpiece the composer himself hoped would be “capable of stirring the world.”
