Okay – so you’ve decided to book a cruise (great!) – Now, you get to select a stateroom, therein lies the challenge.

While an “inside” cabin (no window/porthole) is generally the most cost-effective – it may not be the best choice for you – especially if you’re given to “claustrophobia” – if so, consider up-grading to an “outside” – the window/porthole tends to make the room feel more spacious (airy) – with a view of the horizon – very handy in case of “bumpy seas.”

Do you like to rest peacefully rather than hang with the crowd by the pool? If so, a “balcony” might be your best choice! You can step outside into your own “space.”

Cruise ships offer several options in staterooms – (some as many as 20 “categories” (confused?) While some cabins are larger than others, they all generally contain the same amenities – twin beds (convert to queen), dressing table/writing desk, private bath, closed-circuit television, etc. – BUT – on the upside, suites offer such “goodies” as walk-in closets, “soaking” tubs, and lots of extra space. Such“luxury” is above the budgets of most cruisers – heck Lorraine has never booked above balcony class – “It can be ‘spensive, Lucy”!

Once you’ve decided which type of stateroom you wish to book – WHERE?

Are you prone to “mal de mer?” Then mid-ship lower deck may be your best choice – more stability and less “ocean motion.” Like to sleep-in? If so, you might want to steer clear of a room near elevators or stairwells. Check the ship’s deck plan – you don’t want to be over the disco – or the engine room – (been there/done those – LOL)!

Booking a “guaranteed” stateroom can save you a few bucks – you choose the type – but not the location (that will be assigned by the cruise line prior to sailing.) Have done that a few times and the results have been most satisfactory. In fact, that’s how Lorraine discovered the 24 hour coffee and “munchie bar” only 2 floors below – yum – pizza at 3 a.m. – It don’t get any better ‘n that!

Moral of the story – CRUISE ! If you just want a place to hang your clothes, shower and sleep, an inside cabin will do you just fine! If you want to “blow the budget” on a once-in-a-lifetime experience – go for the biggest suite!

But, remember – whatever and wherever the stateroom you select – unlike Titanic, the food, attractions, and entertainment are the same for all – ENJOY!!!
