We decided to experience Jimmy's on a cold, gray and windy morning, because we thought the fisherfolk crowd would not be there yet. Indeed they were not, but the dining folk got there before we did. We walked in to a busy and shiny-new venue, billed as “Galveston's only ‘above the waves' experience.”
Coffee first, in big cups; good coffee, and real cream. The breakfast menu offers a variety of dishes, ranging from burritos and biscuits to waffles and scones, and of course egg dishes. Ever the Migas lover, I ordered that favorite and added the optional spinach as a healthy experiment. It took a while for the food to arrive, but when it did I was greatly pleased. Scrambled eggs with tortilla strips, onion, cilantro, tomatoes and cheese, with salsa and a mound of tortilla chips on the side (I opted out on the jalapeños) It was fresh, delicious and well-prepared.
My companion decided to order tamales and eggs (he did not opt for the offered veggie, fat-free or gluten-free variations). It appeared as two tamales, two eggs to order (he had them over easy), with sausage and onions, accompanied by chips and salsa. He declared it a perfectly-sized portion, expertly prepared and very tasty, with fresh ingredients. We asked, and the tamales are made on-site.
Miscellany: The use of plastic utensils and paper cups may turn off some diners, but for those who can enjoy the informality the food is well worth it. They do use compostable plastic cups for cold drinks, and paper cups for coffee. There is an accessible dining area downstairs for those needing handicap access.
The lunch/dinner menu is varied and includes seafood fried and grilled, soups, burgers and dogs, and sandwiches, along with an interesting kids menu. The adult beverage choices include a fine variety of beers, including several unusual drafts. Exterior walls are glass panel doors which can be opened to the wraparound porch, offering a fantastic view in all directions. I'm looking forward to another meal there, watching the Gulf warmer weather. If you haven't been to Jimmy's I highly recommend you give it a try.
