The Muffaletta Story

An Italian immigrant Tony Lovi created the Muffaletta in the French Quarters of New Orleans Louisiana in 1901. A Muffaletta is made of the finest Italian salami, ham, provolone cheese, in freshly baked round Italian bread, and with a specially blended olive dressing (they can't tell how it's made, it's a family secret!).

In 1926 at the age of eight Rosario Maceo, started to help his Uncle Tony make and sell Muffaletta's in the French Quarters. Every morning Rosario would get up early to blend the olive dressing, get the fresh bread from the baker, and help Uncle Tony make the Muffaletta's.

After loading up the wooden wagon with fresh Muffaletta's, Uncle Tony and Rosario would make their way down the narrow cobblestone streets of the French Quarters.

At eight years old, Rosario wanted to impress his uncle; he went from kitchen help to salesman. The buildings being three and four stories tall and Rosario only four foot tall, he would run in front of the wooden wagon and yell at the top of his lungs Muffaletta's! Muffaletta's! Get your fresh Muffaletta's!

Being the salesman that Rosario was, they would come down two maybe three flights of stairs to purchase a Muffaletta.

As the sound of the wooden wagon making it's way down the narrow cobblestone streets of the French Quarters falls silent, the memory of Uncle Tony using the finest Italian ingredients are still with them at Maceo Spice and Import.

Stop by the store run by Rosario's son, Ronnie, and chat with Rosario as he makes you a special Muffaletta. Every weekday morning Rosario gets up to make the original Muffaletta as Uncle Tony taught him.

Maceo Spice and Import will gladly ship any quantity of Muffaletta's anywhere in the United States.

Kerry Hall7/29/2008 11:09:00 AMIt was like being a kid in a candy store. This place is a must visit when in Galveston. Excellent muffaletta, great selection of herbs & spices. You must get a bottled tomato gravy/marinara - delicious flavor.
