| Penguin Encounter at Moody Gardens: Up Close and Personal The “Penguin Encounter” at Moody Gardens not only brings you up close with the cold weather birds, but also offers a chance for learning more about them.
| Summer Movie Preview One of the things that Southeast Texas and Hollywood has in common is that their spring season is nearly non-existent. In Galveston we often get a few days of springlike weather, and then land right into a long and wonderfully sultry summer. Hollywood has learned that the summer box office revenues can’t start soon enough, which is why even at the beginning of May, heavyweights like Tom Cruise (Oblivion), and May opener Iron Man 3 are already in cinemas before the kids are even out of school.
| Stalking Beignets at the New Gumbo Diner There is virtually no way to roust an “owl” personality into really enjoying the morning. No way of course, except the offer of a truly tasty memory from New Orleans. The newly opened Gumbo Diner on seawall is now offering that very enticement: freshly made New Orleans’s style Beignets!
| Bathing Beauties on Parade Take a look at a picture of people enjoying a day at the beach from the 1920s or '30s and one thing stands out immediately: folks wore a lot more clothes on the beach than they do now. Modesty was the thing back then, and the Beach Revue, scheduled for May 17-18 in Galveston, celebrates this time when swimwear left much more to the imagination.
| Galveston to Host AIA Sandcastle Competition, Juneteenth Celebration Next Month Two of Galveston’s greatest attractions are its beaches and history, and this June visitors have the chance to celebrate both with two major special events: the AIA Sandcastle Competition and the island’s annual Juneteeth festival.

While there is a lot to do in Galveston, it's also a place where it feels comfortable to do little. At 10.4 miles long, the seawall lining the Gulf of Mexico is the world's longest continuous sidewalk and attracts walkers, joggers, bicyclists, surfers, sunbathers, skaters and sightseers year-round. It's a great place to exercise or just sit to watch a flock of brown pelicans skim across the waves at sunset. |
