Adding to the rebirth of Postoffice Street, this place is lovely to behold. They have done a beautiful decorating job in a small space that feels spacious and cozy at the same time. We enjoyed the blues music in the background. Two large TVs tuned to playoff actions were unobtrusive. Outdoor seating is available as well.
For appetizer we selected a half dozen Barbecued Oysters with blue cheese dressing. These were zingy and flavorful, with a blackened-type preparation. The blue cheese was a pleasing counter point to the spiciness. We chose our beverages from their admirable beer selection (mostly bottled); they also have a decent and reasonably-priced wine list.
I could not resist the Crab Claws and Shrimp from the kettle, steamed in white wine and herb butter broth, with garlic bread for dipping. The bite-sized crab claws and shrimp were well-prepared and fresh. The dipping sauce was exquisite, with a spicy kick but not too much. The serving was small but satisfying. The side of coleslaw (creamy and fresh with a hint of lemon) could have fed us for a week!
My colleague decided to have gumbo, and chose a “Lil Daddy” size serving of Seafood Gumbo. It had plenty of shrimp, crab and oyster with a touch of a lemony flavor. The roux did not have the complexity and depth we would have expected from a South Louisiana recipe.
Our dessert choice was simplified by the fact that they were out of Italian Cream Cake. We ordered a slice of Red Velvet Cake, which was HUGE. It was moist and tender and delicious.
We had been intrigued by the “Mumbo Gumbo”, a pricey dish that includes shrimp, crab, oyster, chicken, sausage and prime rib. It's available only in “Big Daddy” size so we returned a week later to try it out. It was pretty fabulous, full of goodies. The roux again seemed to lack complexity, but did have a delicious spicy flavor. It is a dish for two unless you have a mega appetite.
This is a great place for a casual and delicious meal. It also looks to be a fine happy hour haunt, or sports-watching venue. There are plenty of menu choices to please all palates, ranging from salad to po-boys to gumbo. Definitely deserves a visit.
