This week we ran several deep sea trips and 2 half-day jetty trips.
We saw the opening of the federal red snapper season June 1 for federally permitted charter boats like our 18 passenger boat “Island Girl” charter fishing in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Our red snapper federal season runs through July 21 for private charter fishing boats and party fishing boats.
Fishing beyond 25 nautical miles we found an abundance of keeper size (16 inch minimum) red snapper and limited out on red snapper up to 10 lbs. for our parties of up to 10 persons this past week..
We also caught our first large mangrove snapper of the year. The areas we fished and caught keeper snapper were also good for action on kingfish and a variety of sharks up to 5 ft..
We also caught our first large stingray of the year over 50 lbs.
Our jetty trips catches included sandbar sharks (released), atlantic sharpnose sharks (retained), whiting, gafftop, and spinner sharks (released).
Today on our deep sea trip, clear green water was found beyond 18 miles from the jetties. The water and current was from the southwest gusting over 15 knots, not the best conditions for clear water and top water game fish. However, fishing structure 21 miles out we caught 35 kingfish on drift lines using Spanish sardines in less than 2 hours on a 6 hour trip for 13 persons. The federal bag limit on kingfish is 3 fish per person. Kingfish action was fast and furious and non-stop. We also caught a nice size keeper ling nearby.
Wishing you calm seas and tight lines for next week,
- Captain Paul Stanton.
