Celebrating your birthday can take on a certain level of routine sameness after you’ve orbited the sun a few times: Attend a family dinner. Blow out candles. Open some gifts. Repeat.
But if you’re celebrating the day you joined this crazy circus we call life in Galveston, opportunities abound to do something cool, different and utterly unforgettable. Here are some island venues that lend themselves to unique birthday parties.
Galveston Railroad Museum (2602 Santa Fe Place)
If you think having a birthday party at the Galveston Railroad Museum is something only kids can enjoy, think again. Celebrating your special day in the shadow of a beautifully streamlined Santa Fe Warbonnet, a brilliantly appointed 1929 Anacapa private/business car or a majestic 1892 Southern Pacific steam engine, is not only unique, but may also reawaken in you the childlike awe that these magnificent machines engender. There are numerous other exhibits to enjoy and the museum offers three different facility rental packages that feature railroad-themed cakes and decorations.
Galveston Island Brewing (8423 Stewart Rd.)
While signature beers like the Tiki Wheat, Blue Bridge Amber Ale and the Citra Mellow have put the three-year-old brewery on the craft beer map, it’s also developed quite a reputation as one of the best places on the island to hang. The Tap Room is a beer (and food) lover’s dream, with all of the brewery’s beers available for sampling with some delicious pub food on the menu as well. While the brewery specializes in adult beverages, kids are welcome and there’s a nice playground on-site to keep them entertained. It’s a dog-friendly establishment, too, with your four-legged family members welcome in the expansive yard area. Combine your party with a brewery tour for a thoroughly outside-the-box celebration.
Kitchen Chick (528 23rd St.)
If you can tell the difference between a paella pan and a chef’s pan, then you’ll fit right in at this boutique that specializes in gourmet-caliber kitchen wares and accessories. In addition to offering virtually every type of cook ware under the sun, along with linens and wedding and gift registries, Kitchen Chick also hosts regular cooking classes. What better way to celebrate your love of cooking and birthday revelry than throwing a party that allows you and your guests to explore their inner Julia Child at this downtown shop?
The Rooftop Bar (2300 Ship Mechanic Row)
Situated atop the elegant Tremont House, this bar offers some of the most spectacular views on the island and is renowned as a prime date night destination. But it also makes the perfect location for a breathtaking birthday party. The sophisticated, open-air bar features comfy seating and some of the island’s best signature cocktails, including the Rooftop Sangria and Mojito. Be sure to schedule your party for after sunset when the cool gulf breeze makes this one of the best spots in Galveston. Wash down your birthday cake with a taste of how the other half lives.
