First it was the longest river ride, then the longest torrent (action) river ride, then the tallest waterslide. Now, Schlitterbahn is building the world’s tallest water coaster and putting it in the award-winning Schlitterbahn Waterpark on Galveston Island.
Called MASSIV, the German word for massive, the water coaster will be in place in time for the waterpark’s 10th Anniversary celebration this summer. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island is home to more thrill rides than any other Schlitterbahn Waterpark, making it the perfect home for this record-breaking ride.
Not only will MASSIV be the tallest water coaster in the world, but it will also have a number of other innovations:
A translucent section that will make riders visible from the river below.
Four uphill sections, with six blaster jets.
A triple-drop ending into a landing pool – a never-done-before thrilling finale to the ride.
The exact height of the ride will be announced later this spring.
MASSIV utilizes Master Blaster technology, which was invented 22 years ago by Schlitterbahn’s Wizard of Water, Jeff Henry. This technology was licensed to WhiteWater West, which is the company constructing MASSIV.
“We are thrilled to be bringing this iconic ride to Galveston Island,” said Ron Sutula, General Manager for Schlitterbahn Galveston Island. “It’s a massive anniversary present to all our guests, and is going to be a blast to ride!”
Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island has won numerous awards, including the world’s best indoor waterpark for eight straight years from theme and waterpark enthusiasts world wide. MASSIV will be twice as long as any waterslide in the park and the tallest ride.
MASSIV, named after the German word for massive, is the latest waterslide in the Schlitterbahn family of record-breaking water rides. MASSIV sets a new record for height of a water coaster. This massive ride will be visible as visitors travel into Galveston Island.
Why build this ride at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island?
The park is turning 10 this year and they decided they needed a really big present!
So, what kind of monster is it?
All they know is they have evidence of several claw marks throughout the park and their maintenance team swears they have the feeling that something ginormous is watching them.
What is a water coaster?
A water coaster is a water ride that has multiple uphill sections, uses a ride vehicle (boat, tube, or raft), and has other ride elements (spirals, fish ladders, water screens, etc.) to deliver a thrilling and fun filled ride.
How many riders can ride? Will there be weight and height requirements?
MASSIV is designed as a shared experience ride (1-2 riders), so guests who wouldn’t ride alone can scream in the ear of someone they like. Or don’t like. Rides this massive always have some requirements; single and double riders will need to be at least 48 inches tall. The maximum combined weight of riders is 400 pounds, the maximum for single riders is 300 pounds.
Is there an elevator?
No elevator, no conveyor. Riders will carry a tube to the top of the 123 stairs.
Who’s going to be the first one to ride it?
Every ride they create undergoes rigorous testing and they will announce first riders on MASSIV later.
When will the ride open to the public?
Opening date will be announced soon.
So I get to the top and change my mind. What then?
If you decide to walk back down, you will have completed a walk of 246 steps. Woo hoo!
Is this a ride for everyone?
MASSIV is a shared experience ride, which gives it much wider appeal. People who would never ride something this big, will ride with a friend or family member. But it may be too massive for some folks.
