"Birth" is located on the University of Texas Medical Branch campus, near 10th & Market at the back of the rose garden. Created by Abilene sculptor Arthur Williams in 1987 through the Sol Del Rio Gallery in San Antonio and funded through private gifts. This welded and pressed steel sculpture is coated with lustrous dark brown automotive lacquer.
Williams' sculptures are located in over 25 states, Canada and Mexico, many in private collections. Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of the sculptures he personally owned.
Thankfully, Hurricane Ike was not able to do the same to “Birth”. All parts are sealed and finished with a heavy coating of urethane lacquer to protect them from Galveston's salt air.
It is one of several large steel sculptures over 10,000 lbs. which are located around the United States, including Long Island, Dallas and Salt Lake City.
