I was in dire need of a late breakfast, so ShyKatZ came to mind due to many comments by friends, plus the fact that they serve breakfast all day. We arrived around 11:30 and the lunch crowd had not yet arrived. Plenty of table choices were available so we took a seat while we studied the menu. Then we ordered at the counter from the friendly staff, and filled our own coffee cups. The coffee was excellent.
Breakfast choices are limited but my hunger drew me toward the omelet with ham, cheese, and onion. My dining companion chose "Papaw's Breakfast Plate", with home fries, substituting sausage for ham. Both of us chose biscuits. We didn't have a long wait for the food to be brought to us.
My omelet was just what I needed that day, substantial home-cookin'. In the simple preparation the eggs were tasty if perhaps a bit overdone, ham chunks were large, and cheese was in perfect proportion. My friend said his eggs were perfect over-easy (and he is picky about that), link sausage was great, and the hash browns were flavorful. The biscuits were a bit dense, but the pan-fried aspect made them yummy in a way you won't find anywhere else. Next time I shall try one of their homemade breads.
I have to admit that I've visited ShyKatZ twice before, both times for lunch. The first time I had their chicken salad sandwich on a croissant. The second time I had their chicken salad sandwich on a croissant. Do you get a sense that this is a fabulous sandwich? I would love to try other of the luncheon selections but that is one fine sandwich - if I can just sacrifice once and not order that wonderful sandwich.
ShyKatZ is the third food-oriented establishment to inhabit the corner of 16th and L, but I'll lay odds that this place is going to make it. I have heard only positive comments from friends. The building has been attractively configured to hold a large number of tables, there is plenty of free on-street parking, atmosphere is friendly, and the food is great. Can't beat the combination! Only drawback can be the big lunch crowd, so get there before (or after) the rush. Great casual dining for the whole family and it's easy on your budget.
