We knew that Oasis serves more than juice, so we checked it out for a recent lunch outing. “Oasis” is an appropriate name as the venue is peaceful and attractive and the food service is only part of a market filled with organic foods and other related items that you will not find elsewhere in Galveston. Oasis adds to the downtown revitalization on Rosenberg Avenue.
Each weekday features a special. My companion decided on the Thursday offering: Buckwheat soba noodles with peanut ginger garlic sauce, veggies and tofu, with Rice Chips. The noodles were light and delicate and the flavoring was richly combined in a way that no one taste predominated. The serving was not overlarge but was perfect for lunch.
I ordered off the special board as well, a cup of chilled spicy mango soup and a beet and jicama salad with orange and avocado. The soup was a lovely surprise, cool, slightly sweet and fruity, tasting somehow like the outdoors. It was spicy but not too much so for my timid tastebuds. The salad was shredded raw vegetables, with pumpkin seeds added. Flavors were earthy and subtle and the texture was crunchy and satisfying and the salad was very filling. I had iced coconut tea with it, cooling and refreshing on a hot day. A variety of organic condiments were available on the table but the dishes were so well-flavored that neither of us added anything extra.
There are numerous alternatives to the daily specials, so that the menu offers something for practically every taste. Soups, sandwiches and salads are always available. I've heard that the veggie burgers are excellent. Vegetarian specialties predominate, with salmon available on Friday and Saturday. Of course this is a juice bar, so the menu is filled with fresh juices, smoothies, teas, coffees, and chai. Everything is fresh, and all foods are made to order for the diner.
Neither of us would be considered vegetarian, but we both enjoyed the offerings at Oasis and didn't miss the meat. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, or just looking for a healthy lunch alternative, give Oasis a try.
