Galveston.com Review

It is exciting when an eating establishment re-emerges post Ike. M&M has taken quite awhile to come back, with much speculation by the anticipating public. We gave them a couple of weeks to get in synch. We had decided on the spur of the moment to wander in on a Saturday night with no reservations. The main dining room downstairs was all reserved but we were led to an attractive smaller dining room upstairs. We were impressed at the beautiful restoration and quiet ambiance of the whole place. You would never know it had been under salt water!

We ordered a fine Pinot Noir from the wine offerings, and spent some time reviewing the menu. Other than being more limited than the old M&M, there were many enticing choices in a range of prices. We selected the ceviche appetizer for a starter. It was tangy and fresh with crab, tuna and snapper. I am not usually a big ceviche fan but this one could make me a believer. It was delicious and entirely fresh.

My companion wanted beef and ordered the New York strip. This large serving could easily have satisfied two moderate appetites and was thick, juicy and well-grilled. Being ready for seafood I selected the Pistachio Crusted Snapper. The snapper itself was fine, but the breading and sauce overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the fish. We had vegetable sides of sautéed new potatoes and grilled asparagus. Potatoes were unremarkable but the asparagus was a show-stopper, perhaps the best I have ever enjoyed. After that meal we were totally sated and unfortunately could not sample dessert; another time!

We had seen reports that M&M was reopening in less than its former glory. We found ourselves to be mightily impressed with the place. There are not as many menu offerings as in the old days, but there are plenty of selections and what they offer is fresh and well-done. Entree prices seem a little high compared to local equivalents. The setting is classy, background music lightly jazzy, wait staff friendly and attentive, and the food quite enjoyable. Treat yourself and go check out the new M&M.
