Galveston.com Review

On a cold wintry day, nothing could match the appeal of a hot breakfast that I did not have to prepare. And a Mexican breakfast seemed most appealing of all. So we bundled up and ventured out to Mi Abuelita's. This eatery caters to the breakfast and lunch crowd, with hours from 5am to 3pm (2pm on weekends). It was busy and noisy, with happy chatter. The classic decór included both Christmas and Mardi Gras. I especially loved the painting of cactus flower on the back wall. The kitchen is open to the dining room so all activity was visible from our table. The place was busy but offers plenty of seating.

We received our coffee right away so we could peruse the menu at a leisurely pace, and cups were refilled generously. They offer a vast array of breakfast plates, ranging from pancakes and eggs, to Mexican specialties of chorizo and chicharrones, and even steak and pork chops. Weekend specials include barbacoa and menudo. Menu weekday specials are offered at very reasonable prices, and additional daily specials are posted on the front door.

My favorite is always Migas, so I ordered them a la Mexicana. This includes scrambled eggs with corn chips, tomatoes, and onion, accompanied by refried beans, potatoes, and bacon, plus delicious homemade flour tortillas. (I had my jalapeños on the side since I'm such a coward.) They offer egg white substitution but somehow that would make no sense to me at a Mexican restaurant! The migas were everything I dreamed of: a generous serving, well prepared, crispy potatoes, fresh and tasty salsa (just spicy enough), and savory and crisp bacon. Our waitress brought extra salsa without even being asked. Coffee too. That is my kind of place!

My friend ordered a Mia's Special burrito, which he labeled as "up near the top" on his 1-10 scale. It was loaded with potatoes, eggs, bacon, beans and cheese. The freshly-made flour tortilla was tasty, thick, and substantial enough to hold together despite the generous filling.

Mi Abuelita's is a Galveston classic, good fresh handmade food, friendly and attentive service, and lots of local diners. Prices are quite reasonable. It's a keeper.
