Photo Galveston began celebrating Mardi Gras in 1867; now more than 500,000 attend the festivities annually. Even if you can’t make the actual party, you can have the next best thing.

The Mardi Gras Museum features resplendent costumes, historical memorabilia, and models and photographs of Galveston’s Mardi Gras arches, the 1986 project in which eight world-famous architects were each asked to design an arch for Galveston. So famous was the project that the Smithsonian Institution dedicated an exhibit to it. You can still see one of these fantasy creations down from The Tremont House on Mechanic & 24th streets.
