Galveston.com Review

We were out and about on a weekday morning and had a need for Mexican breakfast. We hadn't been by La Mixteca since Ike so we decided to pop in. Although they were totally inundated by those flood waters, the place looks unchanged. Festive decor and simple furnishings made us feel like we were in Mexico. We were the only diners so we had our pick of seating, plus great attention from the server. We got our coffee right away--it was a little weaker than I prefer--and came with little cream pods instead of fresh cream. Refills were frequent.

The breakfast menu has plenty of standard offerings, but I had to have the Migas a la Mexicana (always my favorite, and my yardstick for any Mexican breakfast). It consists of eggs with tortilla strips, onions, tomatoes and serrano pepper (I substituted bell pepper and got jalapeņos on the side), served with refried beans, fried potatoes and bacon. The Migas were as enjoyable as any I've had in Galveston. The bacon was thick and crisply well-done, good enough that I broke my no-bacon rule. The beans were a little runny. All were tasty. The salsa was very good, with a fine garlicky flavor.

My colleague decided on a Burrito Supreme. The tortilla wrapper was generously endowed with eggs, beans, potatoes, bacon and cheese. It was tasty and filling. The tortilla was tender and not too thick, and adequate to contain all the ingredients.

We perused the lunch menu while we were there, and it has amazing variety: everything from simple standard fare through intriguing seafood offerings. All prices are reasonable and they have daily lunch specials which are especially well-priced. I suspect lunch is their busiest time with downtown workers converging on the place. La Mixteca is not open for dinner.

Overall we enjoyed our meal, and the price was remarkably low. Next time I'm there it will be to sample their lunches.
