La King's Confectionery is your connection to a by gone era. It goes back to the 1920's when Mr.James H King began learning the candymaking art as an apprentice at the St. Regis Confectionery in Houston, Texas. He learned his craft under the watchful eyes of "old-country masters". He established his own business and eventually supplied stores throughout the south. He inspired his son to learn the candy business with the same pride and attention to detail.
In 1976, Jimmy's oldest son Jack, moved his family to the historic Strand in Galveston to recreate an old fashion confectionery. With the help of his family, he created La King's Confectionery. He has continued to use the 19th century formulas and methods handed down to him, making confections using traditional equipment and procedures.
La King's features a 1920's soda fountain, serving malts, shakes, ice cream sodas, sundaes, splits, floats and your favorite fountain drinks. They proudly make and serve "Purity" ice cream, Texas' first ice cream manufacturer, since 1889 founded on Galveston Island.
La King's master candy maker will delight you with his old time specialties - peanut brittle, divinity, pecan pralines, hand dipped chocolates, fudges, and our famous salt water taffy made right before your eyes on antique equipment. They make more than 40 candies from traditional recipes, just waiting for you!
La King's newest addition, a full-service coffee shop, is ready to serve you fresh brewed coffee and your favorite espresso drinks. They carry a full line of fresh roasted Duncan beans as well.

Please tell me you are going to re-open eventually, after the Ike clean-up. It will be such a loss to the Strand to lose you! | | Starr | 9/4/2008 11:19:00 PM | I was born and raised on the island and Kings has the best candy and ice cream around. Galveston is a great place to visit and there is much to see and do on the island!! I think Jane missed some sights along the way to Kings.
Enjoy!! | | Erik | 8/22/2008 9:49:00 AM | La King's taffy, chocolate covered almonds, ice cream, and malts are INCREDIBLE. | | Jane | 8/16/2008 9:32:00 PM | This was one of the best things on the Isle. The ice cream is to die for, and the place has a really nice atmosphere. Sadly, Galveston isn't a very nice place overall, and I wouldn't recommend it for a vacation but this was a bright spot in a place that's not very nice. | | michelle | 8/9/2008 5:01:00 PM | every summer when my family and i visit other family members that live on galveston island we always make sure we go to laking candy store. the people there are always nice. the salt water taffy is excellent. we always pack up alot of candy before we leave galveston. | | Margaret Szydlo | 6/13/2008 11:31:00 PM | Nice place to visit.
