Dr. Susan Vaughan, Executive Director of the Galveston Island Arts Academy, teaches Suzuki and traditional piano at the Galveston Island Arts Academy. She has earned her Ph.D., M.A. in art, music, and piano performance, and M.B.A. in marketing. Susan's Suzuki training through Book IV complements her traditional piano teaching through the intermediate level. Prior to coming to Galveston, Dr. Vaughan was state supervisor of music for Minnesota public schools and served as special services and assessment director at Shakopee Public Schools. Prior to returning to Galveston full time, Dr. Vaughan served as the Secondary Fine Arts Curriculum Manager for the Houston Independent School District, which serviced areas of music, art, dance, and theatre. |

Viktoriya Barton began studying piano at the age of 6 in the Children's School of Arts and completed her early training at the Odessa Institute of Arts and Culture. Viktoriya has lived in the USA for the past 10 years, and is now a U.S. citizen. Viktoriya received her Associate Degree in Piano at the College of the Mainland under Dr. Paul Boyd and recently completed Book I Suzuki Association of Americas training in piano. |

Formerly a student of Manuel Pedraza and John Kiefer, James now teaches with a varied approach to classical and electric guitar instruction. He may be reached through the Galveston Island Arts Academy for lessons beginning in February, 2008. |

A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Christine began playing the violin at the age of eight years. Her private instructors included violinists with the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony orchestras. She has played with several orchestras including the Greater Boston Youth Symphony, the Longwood Symphony of Boston, the Brazosport Symphony, and the Lake Charles Symphony. She also spent several summers studying and playing chamber music at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in Nelson, NH. Currently, she works as a music therapist at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, serves as principal second violinist with the Galveston Symphony, and freelances in the Galveston area. Christine is a regular guest violinist for GIAA weddings and special events. This past year she began playing the electric violin to explore other musical genres such as rock, blues, and jazz improvisation. Christine accepts students of all ages and teaches traditional method of violin playing. She also provides students with learning experiences in music improvisation and duet playing. |

A long-time resident of Texas, Beth Slaughter made her TV singing debut at the age of 10. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education from TCU and a Master of Music from U of H. With over 20 years of experience directing choirs and teaching private voice, Beth is currently the Director of Musical Arts for First Presbyterian Church of Galveston and sings with the Houston Symphony Chorus. Beth teaches both beginning and advanced vocal technique at the Galveston Island Arts Academy. |

Lynne Hughes Springer recently joined the music teaching staff at the Galveston Island Arts Academy (GIAA). She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s in Music Education and a Masters of Secondary Music Education. She has performed as first clarinetist with the Houston Symphonic band under the direction of Robert McElroy and currently teaches both band and general music at Levi Fry Intermediate School in Texas City ISD. Lynne began studying clarinet at the age of 11 in Galveston under the direction of Steve Ruff and Don Wilkins. She was active in District, Region, Area and All-State band throughout her education years in Galveston. After graduation, Lynne studied clarinet with Richard Pickar and Randall Griffin, trombone with Frank Woodruff, trumpet with John Pollard, and music theory with Fisher Tull. |

Violinist and conductor Trond Saeverud is a frequent soloist with orchestras in Europe and the USA, and he has produced CD's with orchestras in Denmark and Norway. A strong advocate for contemporary music, he regularly premieres new works dedicated to him. Trond spends his winters here in Galveston, and summers in Maine, where he is concertmaster of the Bangor Symphony and the artistic director of the Harald Saeverud Chamber Music Program, an international camp and festival for college age music students. This season, Mr. Saeverud will perform the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Galveston Symphony (and the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Bangor Symphony). |

Tom Wood, 2007 graduate of College of the Mainland, has recently joined the guitar faculty at the Galveston Island Arts Academy. He will teach beginning and intermediate electric guitar and bass in individual and group settings. Tom is a freelance musician in Houston and Galveston areas. Trent Minter has recently joined the GIAA as an individual and group guitar teacher. Born and raised in Santa Fe, Texas, he will earn an A.A. music degree from the College of the Mainland (COM) in the spring, 2012. His plans include beginning jazz guitar studies with Mike Wheeler at the University of Houston this fall. He has performed with the COM Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Band, Brass, Rhythm, and Reeds ensemble. And, he is a freelance musician performing recently for the musical, Hair, at ETC and at local coffee shops, such as the Mod. |
