Photo Galveston Catholic School (GCS) was formed in 1986 through the consolidation of four existing Catholic parish schools. Its roots, however, extend far back into Galveston's history. The school is located on the original site of the Ursuline Academy founded in 1847 - the first school in the city and the first Catholic school for girls in the entire state of Texas. The original building was destroyed by Hurricane Carla in 1961, following which the current structure was built in its place. Thus, Galveston Catholic School's heritage dates back to the city's very foundation.

Galveston Catholic School educates students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. Accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Accreditation Commission, the school serves both the City of Galveston and the surrounding area. Twenty-eight percent of the school's students commute from the mainland, with several coming from as far as forty miles away --- testimony to the excellent and dedicated faculty. To accommodate working parents, the school also offers a pre-care and extended hours program.

Philosophy
Though Galveston Catholic School offers a basic, modern curriculum, its mission is focused not only on the students' education, but also on fostering their spiritual growth. By integrating faith with the student's culture, environment, and values, students are assisted with developing their relationship with God and their fellow students.

Daily, students are provided an atmosphere of dignity and respect where they are taught to appreciate their own and others' unique gifts and contributions. Thus, they are challenged to develop an grow --- spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. This prepares them to function as valued and contributing citizens in their daily lives at school, in their families in the home environment, and in their community.

Our philosophy is that a good school will provide a child with access to knowledge, but the best school is one that seeks to instill in children a love of learning. While the imparting of knowledge is a necessary component of education, fostering curiosity and a desire to learn new things is an extraordinary, lifelong gift that we impart to our children. Galveston Catholic School aspires to do both.

Galveston Catholic School represents all that one could seek in a parochial school: an excellent academic program; dedicated, caring teachers; and primary emphasis on Christian values.
