Galveston.com Review We checked out Courtyard Cafe while the weather was comfortable for outdoor seating. Just going into this establishment is walking into another world. We were seated in the midst of a wondrous cacophony of European-feeling architecture and decor, all hand-built by the amazing proprietor Ladislaw Klos--who with his wife also provides the culinary offerings. Our appetites were instantly turned up when we caught the delectable aromas from the kitchen.
Our waitress provided the verbal menu, which changes each week, and assured us that everything is prepared on the premises, truly "homemade". We chose a fine Hungarian Cabernet for an appetizer; there is also have a variety of bottled beers. We were brought hot rolls while we waited for dinner. We didn't wait long, however, as service was very speedy. We should have held off on the rolls but they were so good we couldn't resist.
My companion ordered the Farmer's Pork Chops accompanied by tangy roasted vegetables, all of which could easily have fed more than one farmer. I've never seen pork chops so thick and juicy, and so tender they almost fell apart on the plate. The side of steamed red cabbage was slightly sweet and a perfect accompaniment. He gave everything an emphatic thumbs up.
I'm not always a fish lover but I selected the Tilapia over rice as an experiment, with steamed red cabbage on the side. It was and perfectly prepared, breaded and lightly pan-fried. The flavor was fresh and slightly nutty and as delicious as any I've tried. The side of cucumber salad was tangy and oh-so-European.
Another dining companion ordered Wiener Schnitzel, one of the Courtyard's signature dinners (and always on the menu). He declared it to be as good or better than any he has ever had in Vienna. And he is a world traveler so that's real praise.
>Of course we had to share the homemade cheesecake with cherry glaze. It was fresh and creamy and not too sweet. And enough for three.
I could go on and on. Everything was delicious, service was friendly and efficient, servings were generous, and the surroundings are beautiful. We were quite pleasantly surprised when we received the check. This place is a budget diner's dream.
Do not miss this place. Go to Courtyard Cafe and you're in for a treat. Open Wednesday through Saturday, evenings only.
