Galveston.com Review
When we pulled up to the Captain’s Table it was early evening in late May, still warm from the day, with a light breeze. We decided to try dining “al fresco” and wandered out into the palapa. Do not miss this! Environment was breezy and comfortable. If you venture to this eatery be sure to sit outdoors for this free visit to the Caribbean. Vintage background music must be the best on the Island. Staff members were all extremely friendly, gave us enough attention but not too much, and never rushed us. Resident feline “Stormy” was present but not intrusive. We enjoyed a glass or two of wine during dinner as we enjoyed the breeze and watched the sunset. This is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience.
Now for the food, which is why we were there in the first place. We decided to try an appetizer of crab and artichoke dip. It was creamy, mostly crab, a bit of artichoke, subtly flavored, but nothing to write home about. The real winner was the salad bar. Fresh, lots of choices of veggies and fressings. That’s what I’ll stick with next time.
For entree, we’d heard that their flounder is excellent. My companion won the coin toss and ordered the broiled flounder. It arrived fresh and hot and steamy in all its glory: tender, meaty, flaky, and everything he’d dreamed it would be. It was accompanied by a light and not overwhelming garlic-butter sauce. The accompanying baked potato was appropriately fluffy, and came with all the toppings you could want. This is what a seafood dinner is meant to be.
Since he was having the flounder, I chose the broiled seafood platter. It was huge, and included stuffed crab and shrimp, fried oysters, and broiled shrimp and fish and scallops. Everything was fresh and tasty, but not what I might have expected from a broiled entree. The stuffed oyster and shrimp were very bready, and the fried oysters were also heavy on the breading. The broiled items were in a buttery sauce, so this is not for the calorie conscious. The side of steamed vegetables was tasty if a bit overly soft.
Even after all this we had to try the key lime pie. Delicious, with a graham crust.
All in all the ambiance was fabulous, the staff superb, the flounder flawless, and the other food fine. Portions were very generous. Next time I’ll win the coin toss and go for the flounder.

Great place to eat. Good food and atmosphere, best on the island. Hope they survived the hurricane. | | Jackie | 9/7/2008 11:25:00 PM | Wow, what a waste! High prices, low quality. I ordered the fried oysters and I could have done just as well by driving home to the East End and defrosting a Groton's frozen dinner. The food came out with no bread, and 1 little thimble of cocktail sauce that was absorbed by the first oyster tht I dipped in it. Thank goodness for beer because the tea was so old it left an aftertaste that took 4 crackers to absorb. (I borrowed the crackers from my date's plate because they didn't bring those with the oysters either.) The place has an odd odor too...kind of like old grease. Don't stop here if you are in the West end, unless you just have to get rid of alot of money really fast. | | michelle | 7/12/2008 3:34:00 PM | First was the last for this place. Menu was pricey and the food was not up to par. I don't mind paying for a great meal "Gaidos", but the food and service has to be worth it. It simply was not here. I always see alot of people at the outdoor bar area when we drive by so it must be the drinks.... | | Larry McCrary | 7/11/2008 2:40:00 PM | The restaurant is located on west beach, about 5-6 miles west of Casey' Seafood. Service was terrible and the food was good. My wife had the broiled flounder and she said it was just OK, I had the Capitan Jack's Snapper grilled and wasn't good to my taste. We will not go back. | | Brenda Calhoun | 6/19/2008 12:42:00 PM | The restaurant is pretty far outside of Galveston so you really have to know it is there to even try it. Because of this I really expected the food to be sensational to encourage repeat business but I was very disappointed. The prices are pretty high but the food was mediocre. I had the Sprimp Wilhelm, but it was mostly tomato paste with a few very small overdone shrimp. My mother had the Fried Catfish and it was mostly cornmeal batter, nothing special at all. The fresh steamed veggies were great, and the salad bar was good. The margaritas were great. But all in all, not worth a repeat visit. |
