Galveston is home to hundreds of species of birds. Egrets, herons, ducks, hawks and gulls are a few who spend time on the Island. Those interested in learning more about area birds are invited to Moody Gardens for Birding 201.
Birding 201 classes, held the third Saturday of every month, brings birding enthusiasts to different spots on the island to view birds of all colors and sizes.
Birding 201 classes bring participants to see birds at various locations in Galveston including Sportsman’s Road, Eight-Mile Road and Galveston Island State Park. “We wanted to take the show on the road so to speak, “ said Unruh, adding, “Every month, we’ll go to a different location.”
What can birding enthusiasts expect to see on these trips? According to Unruh, the group will be able to spy shore birds, waterfowl, birds of prey and songbirds. Specifically, they’re likely to see snowy egrets, ospreys, American Oyster Catchers and several types of herons. Participants for these classes are encouraged to bring binoculars, a field guide and to wear outdoor-appropriate shoes.
Moody Gardens entered into a partnership with the Galveston Nature Tourism Council in early 2005 and began hosting birding workshops in March 2005. Moody Gardens is a public, non-profit, educational destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.
Birding 201 classes meet at the Aquarium Pyramid at 9:00 am. The classes cost $5.00 and include transportation and soft drinks. Reservations should be made no later than the Wednesday prior to the class. To reserve a space, call 800/582-4673 ext. 4105.
