Galveston is home to hundreds of species of birds. Egrets, herons, ducks, hawks and gulls are a few who spend time on the Island. Those interested in learning more about area birds are invited to Moody Gardens for Birding 101. Birding 101 is a series of free classes designed to educate and excite people about the tremendous variety of bird life in the area.
Birding 101 classes, held on the second Saturday of every month, teaches the basics of birding.
Birding 101 classes begin with a power-point presentation and are followed by a tour of the Moody Gardens property where participants can spot a variety of bird species. According to Jeremy Unruh, Birding 101 instructor, they can expect to see “anywhere from 20 to 45 bird species on the property during class.” He added, “One of the highlights of the tour is when we spot a peregrine falcon that nests at the hotel."
Moody Gardens entered into a partnership with the Galveston Nature Tourism Council in early 2005 and began hosting birding workshops in March 2005. Moody Gardens is a public, non-profit, educational destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.
Birding 101 classes are free. They meet from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the Aquarium Pyramid. Reservations should be made no later than the Wednesday prior to the class. To reserve a space, call 800/582-4673 ext. 4105.
