Galveston.com Review

Michael Burger is a longtime favorite among many Islanders and visitors alike. We sampled the fare on a Saturday evening in August. The weather was quite warm and we thought a burger and drink would hit the spot. Everything is casual about Michael Burger, from the atmosphere, to the menu choices and the dress code. This is a place where you can come in your bathing gear and enjoy a meal and beverage indoors or on the breezy deck.

Even with the constant flow of diners the place wasn’t overly filled, and we had our choice of tables. The menu is simple and limited in choices. Ordering is at the walk-up window, and before we knew it our number was called. We picked our cold beer from a tub holding a wide selection of domestics and imports.

Since Michael Burger specializes in German food and burgers, we had to try both. My dining companion chose the Wienerschnitzel—how can you be more German? He enjoyed the red cabbage with raisins, and the roasted potatoes with bacon, and said they tasted authentically German. The Wienerschnitzel was lightly breaded, delicately fried, and fork-tender, but under-seasoned for his taste.

I decided to live it up and have the Jamaica Beach Burger, in honor of the 50th anniversary of that west end enclave. It is billed as “sweet-n-spicy like the Islands”. I had the jalapeño omitted, which left the burger needing more seasoning. The main flavor was slightly pineapple but definitely not spicy. Next time I’ll try a different burger style. The curly fries were excellent.. There are several kids’ meals offered, and our six-year-old child’s-plate critic said the grilled cheese sandwich was superb (except that she had to remove the bread crusts, of course).

The dessert to try was homemade apple strudel. It was served warm with vanilla ice cream. It is definitely comfort food.

Overall Michael Burger is a fine place to take the entire family for a casual meal. Friendly staff, quick service, and decent food at a decent price. Great view!
