Come out and celebrate the arts in the second-to-last ArtWalk of 2017. Stroll around Galveston’s Historic Downtown District and experience wonderful works of art with this unique experience.
For more than 25 years the Galveston Arts Center (GAC) has organized and produced this great event approximately every six to eight weeks on Saturday nights in the heart of the historic district. The GAC encourages a working relationship with both the non-profit and commercial art spaces in the city by coordinating exhibition opening nights. Not your typical street festival, ArtWalk takes place in existing commercial galleries, non-profit arts spaces and what are called "other walls" (restaurants and retail stores, for example). Now spreading to other parts of the island, each exhibits art and welcomes viewers with open doors, later hours and some refreshments.
There’s truly something for every aesthetic sense here, from avant-garde works by nationally renowned artists, to handmade crafts, to whimsical paintings perfect for a beach house. Visitors stroll from gallery to gallery and the fun spills out into the streets, with food and drink vendors lining the sidewalk. ArtWalk’s newest feature is the Art Market on Market St., an evening of live music, painting, photography, jewelry, performance art and temporary social art.
One of the Galveston Arts Center's largest programs, the event draws between 1,000 to 3,000 visitors per evening, promotes visual art and artists, offers alternative places to see and learn about art and hopes to bring newcomers, as well as welcome return visitors to the art community on the island.
Spanning from Avenue M to Harborside Drive, ArtWalk is getting bigger and better with every installment. More than 25 different locations to stop by and marvel at works of art, Galveston’s ArtWalk has turned in to a premier event on the island!
