When Houston-based artists David Hardaker and Ray Phillips began plans to open a contemporary art gallery, they were often met with tilted heads and skeptical glances. However, they felt certain they had picked the right place for their gallery concept.
Located in Galveston's Strand Historic District, Avis Frank Gallery lies just around the corner from the Tremont House. The gallery occupies the Rice Baulard Building, built in 1870 as one of the first art supply stores in Texas. With lime-washed walls, high ceilings, and an atrium in the rear, the gallery offers the sort of visual environment seldom found in the Houston area. The whitewashed walls and open space add a comfortable sophistication to the Soho loft-like gallery.
Both Hardaker and Phillips have successfully lived on either side of the art fence, running galleries in addition to working as contemporary artists. While working on the concept for Avis Frank, the pair spent many months discussing logistics and scouting locations. In the end, they decided to take the idea to Galveston. Hardaker and Phillips hoped to contribute to Galveston's revitalization, so they made it the base for Avis Frank Gallery.
In addition to curated shows, Avis Frank plans to serve as an art movie house, premiering films in the space, as well as play host to visiting artists to display temporary exhibits.
