The Galveston Art League was founded in June, 1914. Today, it enjoys the distinction of being the oldest art league in Texas. Throughout the years, the league has exhibited the work of local artists, sponsored art instruction by well known artists, provided student scholarships and introduced Galvestonians to the cultural world.

In 1968 the League was incorporated. The purpose at that time and which continues today is, "to establish an art studio for working groups and a gallery for the exhibition of the art work and sales thereof for the enrichment of children and adults in the area of art and art related subjects and its appreciation in all aspects."

Today's members are committed to further develop programs as stated by the foresighted founders of the Galveston Art League.

In January 2004, the Galveston Art League was extremely proud to sponsor and present a new and exciting program. The league developed an outreach program called, "The World of Art" for the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Galveston. One hour out of their world into the world of art we love.

On May 29, 2004, the league opened its new temporary home at 2117-A Postoffice Street. The league's long-range goal is to their own facility. The league has established a building fund and is seeking individual and corporate funds. The Galveston Art League presents four shows annually and sponsorships are needed for these exhibitions.
