Galveston.com Review We've been to Apache so many times, always commenting that it's been there "forever". When we went for lunch today we discovered it's been here over 50 years! Now that IS "forever" in the restaurant world. What keeps them going? One example is a friend and former Galvestonian here for a visit; we met him there for lunch because he needed his "Apache" fix.
We had all the light and crispy tortilla chips we wanted, while we drank ice tea and contemplated our order. (The salsa was OK but somewhat bland IMHO.) We weren't in a hurry, which was good because the food is prepared on-site and we waited a bit for it to arrive. We ordered a large guacamole to gnosh on while we waited: generously-sized, delicious and creamy, served on a bed of shredded lettuce. I love guacamole.
Ever seeking "healthy" food, even at a Mexican restaurant, I ordered a taco salad, with fajita chicken. It was served in a large shallow shell, which was somewhat soft but just crispy enough, and tasty. The salad itself was very fresh lettuce with a nice scoop of guacamole on top. The chicken was many well-grilled tidbits, savory if a bit chewy. The delightful surprise mixed in with the greens was some wonderful queso dressing. It was so good I didn't spoil it with any extra dressing, but I did add a little extra salsa. Overall a highly satisfying lunch.
My companion ordered "Enchiladas Veronica", a lunch plate with rice and beans. The enchiladas were chicken and cheese, and he chose refried beans. White cheese and tomatillo sauce topped it off. Nothing outstanding but fine for what it is, classic Tex-Mex.
Our visiting friend was quite happy with his "Mexican Dinner" with the Chicken original enchiladas plus crispy beef tacos, and of course rice and beans (he ordered his "charro"). He said he would be able to make it another year until his next visit.
Apache is nothing fancy but it's good and dependable and the food is fresh. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's always one of our favorite sources for take-out tamales when we have a dinner party (order ahead by phone).
